Vision: I feel like I need to immediately justify the minus 1/2 star on vision. The only reason this isn't 5/5 across the board was because of the title, caused me to question the vision. Does the artist see this as a microcosm (as I do)? Or is this just a striking composition, in terms of the photographer’s intention? Unfortunately I couldn't make that determination from the title.
My favorite visual component of this shot is the amazing tricks it plays on the eye because of the various geometric components. I believe the black and white color also contribute to this in a subtle way. For example, that house is right about center but it is almost difficult for me to keep my eye there. From the first moment I set my eye to this photo I’m drawn from the road at the bottom right corner past the house then ultimately into a dark fog which leads my eye to the final position somewhere above the house. I find it extremely satisfying that I symbolically wind up off the road and lost in the fog when I look at a picture with a house right in the middle!
But this effect gets even better. The other main starting place visually (in my opinion) is the large grass area. But as I look there I am led straight away to the same dark fog, then into the lighter fog above the house! No matter where I start I am led "off the road" and into a state of visual ambiguity. The strong vertical electric poles & power lines work as a fence which prevents me from escaping the predestined route to the clouds by wandering off and to the left. Because they are directly on the edge of the image, I cannot escape their confinement.
Originality: I've never seen anything like this before, on deviantart or in real life. This is museum quality because it could be placed next to nearly any famous piece of art and hold its own. The only difference here is that this photo is not famous which, for me, makes me enjoy it more because I feel like I have sort of discovered it.
Technique: It wouldn't be appropriate for me to judge this in terms of technique; I'm not a photographer.
Impact: I feel that the real impact of this image is the use of space and the fog prevents the image from being unnecessarily over burdened with details further in the distance. The geometry of the various elements here also contributes to that definite, tangible, prison like containment quality. The road coasts consistently into the background, the chunk of grass has a smooth trapezoid sense to it, and the sky is a blank (and very clean) rectangle that is visually fluid (as in naturally guiding the eye) because of the proximity to the road, then anchored by the house which seems to function as a grounding cornerstone.
I really enjoyed this picture, thanks for sharing it.
