I have the solution to this conundrum. A friend of mine on dA is a professor of literature. I shall present this weighty problem to him and we will have closure!

Interesting! My impression was that one would personally see somebody else in person as opposed to a picture of them. This would disqualify non humans and objects. But thinking about it 'personally' would be redundant in the above statement. Thank you Professore!
